What Happens When You Set IP Addresses Which Can't Exist

Question: I have set up the IP-address of the EM100 (DS100) to x.x.x.0 and now the DS Manager cannot find it on the network. What do I do?

Answer: This is an _illegal_ IP addressm because it ends with a 0. If you set the IP-address to x.x.x.0 the Device Server will actually run using this address: x.x.x.1. In other words, last “0” will be automatically replaced with “1”. This won't be done to the value of the IP Setting itself- this value can only be modified by you. Instead, the actual IP assumed by the Device Server on startup will be different from the one defined by the IP Setting. That is, when the Device Server boots up it will verify the IP-address and change its “run-time” value (if necessary) to make sure that this value is valid.

Actually, there are other, less frequently encountered, invalid IP-addresses. So, here is the full list of all substitutions:

  • x.x.x.0 → x.x.x.1
  • x.x.x.255 → x.x.x.1
  • 224.x.x.x → 223.x.x.x

Example: supposing, you set this IP-address: 224.168.100.255. Then, the EM100 (DS100) will actually be running with the following IP-address: 223.168.100.1
