How to Perform a Serial Firmware Upload

Question: How do I perform a serial upload of new (or old) firmware?

Answer: Whenever you have a problem with either loading the wrong firmware or suspect that there are problems with the firmware which caused access problems, please try to upgrade the firmware through the serial port. This is our fail-safe port for dealing with firmware related problems.

A serial firmware upload is the most reliable way to load your device with new firmware. It can be done either through DS Manager or through Device Explorer. The procedure is simple, but you have to perform it exactly.

Using DS Manager

  1. If the device is on, turn it off.
  2. Connect the device to your computer with a serial cable. If you have a multi-port device, use Port 0 (COM0) on the device.
  3. Run DS Manager.
  4. Select Serial Access in DS Manager.
  5. Select the COM port to which you connected the DS.
  6. Click Upgrade in DS Manager
  7. Select the firmware file
  8. Click OK
  9. Now while the DS is still OFF press the setup (MD) button, and keep it pressed. Make sure it's really pressed.
  10. While keeping the button pressed, re-connect the DS to power.
  11. After about one second, let go of the MD button.
  12. You should see a progress bar – upgrade is being performed.
  13. At the end, disconnect the DS from power.
  14. Re-connect the DS to power.
  15. Done! If this is a Fixed Firmware device, you may need to initialize it by pressing the Setup button for 3 seconds.

Using Device Explorer

  1. If the device is on, turn it off.
  2. Connect the device to your computer with a serial cable. If you have a multi-port device, use Port 0 (COM0) on the device.
  3. Run Device Explorer
  4. Click Upload
  5. Click Load Firmware Through The Serial Port
  6. Select the firmware file
  7. Select the COM port to which you connected your device
  8. Now while the DS is still OFF press the setup (MD) button, and keep it pressed. Make sure it's really pressed.
  9. While keeping the button pressed, re-connect the DS to power.
  10. After about one second, let go of the MD button.
  11. You should see a progress bar – upgrade is being performed.
  12. At the end, disconnect the DS from power.
  13. Re-connect the DS to power.
  14. Done! If this is a Fixed Firmware device, you may need to initialize it by pressing the Setup button for 3 seconds.
