My serial data gets split into several packets. What do I do?

Question: I'm trying to get Data from a Barcode terminal connected via RS232 to the Tibbo DS100. I get the Data, but I get it sometimes all in one packet and somtimes in several packets.

How can I know that I got the last data bytes? Does the Tibbo makes a Close connection? I get some of the data in few packeges and don't know how to paste them.

Default IP Address for DS

Question: I don't see the DS on my LAN for some reason (using DS Manager). Can you tell me what is the original IP address of the DS so I could detect it?

Answer: The default IP address for Device Servers is usually a “loopback” address -- 127.0.0.1. It has no meaning in a LAN -- it refers to the device itself only.

Question: DS Manager or Connection Wizard cannot find my Device Server on the network. I cannot communicate with the Device Server through the router.

Answer: First of all: Are you sure that the Device Server is properly powered and connected to the network?

Question: The Client is the Slave? Or is it the Master? And what about the Server? What do these names mean?

Answer: Many users may be confused by these designations. First of all, let us begin with the simple facts, and then explain why it is so:

Working with Multiple Sockets

Question: Does your Device Server support multiple socket connection?

Answer: NO, only one connection is possible at any time. The use of the serial port is exclusive: only one host can connect to the Device Server at a time. The reason for this is that the serial port is not meant to be a shared communications media. Unlike, say, USB, it is intended to be used by only one application at a time. Consider this: a regular COM port on the PC can only be opened by one program at a time. In a simila…

Security Aspects of Server (Slave) Mode

Question: The DS100/EM100 can communicate with and will accept the data from any PC (Station) on the network. Isn't this too risky from the security point of view?

Answer: Yes, in the Slave mode of operation the DS100/EM100 will accept the data from any PC and reply to any PC. Thus, “security is low” in the Slave mode. However, in the Master mode the DS100/EM100 will only work with the PC (or any other “Station” on the network) whose IP-address and Port number are preset in the DI (Destination…

Question: I have connected to the DS202 through Telnet but I am not getting a response from the unit. When I do a ”+++” I do not get OK from the device.

Answer: When we say that our second-generation devices (such as DS202 and EM202) support Telnet we mean that you can perform the setup of the Device via TCP connection to Telnet port 23.
